The Story of Fish Sticks

Fish Sticks began when three professional players at ComedySportz in Milwaukee decided that they wanted to see if they could find a way to do improv comedy with a higher purpose in mind.  So one cold November morning in 2006, Whit, John and Dave got together for breakfast and decided to put something together.  What that something was wasn't entirely clear at that point, but it was a start.

Over the next few months, the three Sticks decided to focus their energies on doing short-form improv shows for churches, schools, charities for outreach, fellowship and fundraising as primary.  Their commitment to doing squeaky-clean improv has been a constant, too -- but while their shows are done primarily at churches and Christian schools, their "never-cross-the-line," all age appropriate, high energy improv comedy has broadened their base to corporate events, clubs, etc.

The Sticks set their first show date for February 10, 2007, with Woodridge Community Church as a sponsor.  The Sticks felt that maybe God was interested in this little thing when after church one Sunday in January, 2007, a fellow church member who happened to be an entertainment reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel turned to Whit and said -- "Hey Whit, we're doing a cover story in the Journal Sentinel on Christian comedy.  Do you know of anything local?"  Well, of course, we did at that point, having just set our first show dates.  So Fish Sticks was covered in the paper before their first show!  That night, about 360 people showed up.  Not bad for a premiere!

From that point on, things have been rolling along.  In July, 2007, Nancy Mueller joined Fish Sticks as the first chick Stick (to use her words).  That definitely classed the thing up.  Andy Burgmeier joined in 2008, as did Joe and Jodi Lucas a bit later that year.  Each Stick brings a little something different to the table, and the blend has been pretty cool to see develop.

Certainly most shows were, and still are, within the Sticks home territory -- from their base in Milwaukee, south to Chicagoland, west to Madison, and north to Green Bay and the Fox Valley.  But the Sticks are on the move beyond their home turf, and have garnered some national attention as well.

In January, 2010, the Sticks took a big step by recording shows for later broadcast on my1channel.com and DVD.  They partner their improv with video sketch work and other things.  More info to come, and we'll let you know when the broadcasts begin, but be sure to check http://www.fishsticks.tv/ as things develop.
